WAF Awards – celebrate hope

Thank you to all applicants to the 2016 WAF Awards! We have received over 170 applications  from all over the world, each of them an inspiring story of successful initiatives in the areas of water, air and food security.

Our independent expert committee has evaluated all applications based on the sustainability criteria and selected the 9 finalistsYou can now follow their stories and vote for your favorite. This is the first year WAF Awards winners will be selected by public online vote.

The Humanitarian Water Air Food Awards launches a yearly call for applications to individuals, groups and organisations anywhere in the world developing solutions that bring water, food and clean air to those in need. The main conditions for applying are for the project to satisfy selection criteria below, and have at least 2 years of proven results and success in bringing relevant change. The call for the 5th edition of the WAF Awards will be launched in the beginning of 2017.

The highlight of the year is the Awards Ceremony, where the winners are presented with the WAF Award trophy, receive international exposure and share their experiences with academics, business leaders, and the world.

Selection criteria


The project introduces new or better technologies, models or practices into areas in need.


The initiative has potential to grow and provide bigger impact.


The model is built on the pillars of economic and social development and protection of biodiversity.


The solution provides a learning model of sustainable practices that can be implemented in other communities.


Your project creates new and better opportunities for the affected communities and will empower their members.


The project has significant actual and potential environmental, economic and social impact, and has produced concrete results for at least 2 years.


WAFA believes that clean water and air and healthy food are every person’s birthright. Together, we can all make that a reality. WAFA works to identify innovative visionaries, from around the world, who are creating proven breakthrough solutions. We call them Exceptional Pioneers.

They are exceptional pioneers in the areas of food, air and water – and they can be found all over the globe, from urban jungle to rural tundra.  We are interested in hearing from or about everyone.  We want to bring them into the limelight of public awareness, so that more opportunities will be available to them; they need to be recognized and celebrated for all the fantastic deeds they’re doing for our world.
